For the next exercise, I need to chose a song or a poem and prepare around 10 sketches to interpret the words. Then, select one for further development.
The song I’ve chose is Ed Sheeran’s ‘Castle on the Hill’
It was more difficult than I thought to find lyrics, as there are plenty of songs which have a meaning to me, but a lot of the words are tricky to interpret. I think this song, however, is quite clear in the meaning of the words.
These are my sketches. Apologies for the basic sketches in pencil – I was on holiday and didn’t have much in the way of equipment with me.
These were just playing with the words, but I think there’s too much in the first picture.
I prefer the first castle to the last picture and I’m quite liking the lips…
Top picture is a bit basic, not quite as I’d imagined. Second one, still a bit busy. I decided to combine a few of the images and came up with the last one. I think it suits an album cover more. When I researched album covers, the stand out ones are more ‘pop art’ and pronounced, full of vivid colour and often ‘cartoony’ I think this is the direction I need to go in.
I’m quite pleased with this. It’s a bit outside of my comfort zone as I don’t do a lot of painting, but for once, it’s pretty similar to what I’d imagined. If I could change anything, I’d probably make the car bigger, to fit the scale. I also might make the sunset pink so the lips could be red?
