The Golden Section
I’ve never heard of this term so I’m interested to learn about it. It would appear to come under varying but similar names; golden section, golden ratio, Fibonnaci’s ratio (or sequence), divine proportion. Apparently, this term is hundreds of years old – I personally had to find a vey simplistic explanation as I found it far too confusing.
The Golden ratio is a special number found by dividing a line into two parts so that the longer part divided by the smaller part is also equal to the whole length divided by the longer part. It is widely believed that this ratio (1 to 1.618) makes a good shape for drawing.
The ratio apparently appears universally in building design, art, the human body; it’s even thought that it was used by Botticelli and Leonardo DaVinci. Even before Fibonacci, it’s thought that the ancient Greeks used it for their temples.
The ideal face shape can also be calculated using this ratio, from the length and width of the face, the distance between the eyes, the eyebrows etc.
Fibonaccis ratio, or golden spiral, is slightly different, but based on the same principle. A series of numbers are formed , by adding two numbers together in corresponding order, which I recall from sequences, or nth term, from maths.
1 + 1 = 2, 1 + 2 = 3, 2 + 3 = 5, 3 + 5 = 8 etc
